Pain in the Neck! How the Pain in Your Neck Drastically Affects Your Health

Soreness, tightness, spasms, intense pain– you feel it when you wake up, or perhaps during your workday– rubbing your neck doesn’t seem to help, and you try to cover up the problem with medication hoping that it will eventually go way. Seem familiar?

Know that your neck is incredibly engineered. It was created with its own built-in shock absorber called curve or lordosis. The curve was designed to act like a spring and absorbs the shock of your head resting on your curve. It’s a significant amount of pressure (to hold the head up) over time, and the importance of keeping this curve is imperative to the transmission of “information” from your brain to your nervous system. When your neck loses this curve ligaments supporting your neck become stretched and lose their ability to maintain a natural curve. This can happen due to a motor vehicle accident, chronic poor posture, or uncorrected vertebral misalignment.

Once your neck has lost its normal curve, your neck and shoulders attempt to hold your head in the proper position. Unfortunately, they were not created to do this and they tire easily. This is when your neck becomes overworked and you being to feel the tightness and muscle fatigue in the neck and shoulder area.

Our office has experienced considerable success in relieving neck pain. WE utilize the state-of-the-art technology, the ProAdjuster, to identify the source of your ailments. In fact the ProAdjuster’s revolutionary technology has received a patient satisfaction rating of over 92%.

If you or someone you know is suffering from neck pain, you may want to consider being evaluated with the ProAdjuster. Please contact our office today to schedule your evaluation. You have nothing to lose but your neck pain!

Before you Pop That Pain Pill…

There seems to be a pill for everything these days. We live in a convenient magic pill society where everything is solved by a tiny pill; it seems almost too good to be true. Well, sadly, it is, and many people are facing severe repercussions because of these “magic pills”, especially with regard to pain medications, or painkillers as we often refer to them. Lasting effects can be, but are not limited to, dependency, endless increases in dosages due to increased tolerance, liver damage, ulcers, decreased brain function, and this just names a few.

Let’s first discuss pain. The direct and indirect cost to society of lower back pain has been estimated to be approximately $50 billion annually. In fact, lower back pain is the most common cause of disability in people under the age of 45, and of the $27 billion spent on all musculoskeletal trauma, $16 billion is spent in the management of low back pain, with more than half of that $16 billion being spent on surgical treatment.

Health care practitioners have long debated over which type of treatment is the most effective for chronic lower back pain (CLBP). A recent landmark study, published in the prestigious medical journal Spine, has put another nail in the coffin of this debate. Fro years the medical profession has demanded more evidence in the form of randomized controlled clinical trials demonstrating the effectiveness of chiropractic care for CLBP. Well, the evidence is in and what chiropractic patients and chiropractic physicians alike have known for decades has been demonstrated!

In the study published by Spine, 115 patients experiencing lower back pain for at least 13 weeks duration were randomly assigned to receive one fo three interventions: medication, needle acupuncture or chiropractic manipulation.

One of the study’s most remarkable findings was that patients in the chiropractic manipulation group reported a 47 percent improvement, compared to only 15 percent for the acupuncture group and 18 percent for the medication group.

“in summary, the significance of the study is that for chronic spinal pain syndromes, it appears that spinal manipulation provided the best overall short-term results”.

If you or someone you know is suffering from lower back pain, you may want to consider being evaluated. Please contact our office today to schedule your evaluation. You have nothing to lose but your back pain!

The Ultimate Superhighway- Your Spine

A short course in the basics of spinal anatomy is tremendously helpful in understanding why the chiropractic profession is the number one source of alternative care in the world, and why your spinal alignment is so crucial to you achieving optimal health.

The central nervous system (the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord) is connected to the peripheral nervous system (the spinal peripheral nerves) and controls the way we more and function. Our skull protects our brain and most of our brain stem, and the spine provides protection to our spinal cord and spinal nerves.

The spine is a column of 33 small bones called “vertebrae” that supports the entire upper body. The column is grouped into three sections: the cervical spine (neck), the thoracic spine (middle back), and the lumbar spine (lower back).

Vertebrae in the spinal column are separated from each other by small “cushions” of cartilage known as inter (between) vertebral discs. The vertebrae and discs combine to create a space for each spinal nerve to exit from the spinal cord on its way to the body. Abnormal positioning of the vertebrae (also known as the vertebral subluxation complex or nerve impingement syndrome) can compromise the nerve space, and create nerve irritation or nerve interference. The nerve will still influence the muscle or organ it supplies, however the quality of the nerve transmission will be affected.

Here’s probably the most important concepts to grasp– nerve interference may occur without the trace of any symptoms.

Once this interference is detected, your doctor of chiropractic is uniquely trained to apply spinal adjustments. In fact, although other professionals utilize spinal maneuvers as part of their treatment, doctors of chiropractic deliver 94% of all spinal adjustments.

Although each individual responds differently to chiropractic care, research reveals that most are very satisfied with the care they receive. In fact, a recent Gallup Poll of chiropractic patients conducted showed that: 90 percent of chiropractic patietns considered their chiropractic treatment to be effective.
